James Schaefer, Lancaster 9-2
Chief Schaefer joined the
Lancaster Fire Department as a member of the Protective Hose Company
(PHC) in 1991. Chief Schaefer can trace his roots to the very beginning
of the Lancaster Fire Department in 1874. On his mother's side, the
family has had continuous service since 1874. Joseph Adolf (Great-Great
Grandfather) was a charter member of the Rescue Hook and Ladder and
served from 1874-1928. Frank Adolf (Great Grandfather) served the Protective
Hose from 1904-1954, and was the first 50 year member of that company.
Bernard Adolf (PHC) service interrupted from 1929-1957. Chief Leonard
Adolf (PHC) served from 1952-1973. Norbert Adolf (Grandfather) joined
the Protectives in 1939 and continues to be on the active list.
Chief Schaefer follows a blood
line of Lancaster Fire Department Chiefs from both sides of his family.
Chief Frank Schaefer (Great Grandfather) Eagle Hose Company, 1909.
Chief Leonard Adolf (PHC), 1967-1968. Chief Timothy Schaefer (first
cousin) Citizens Hose Company, 2005-2006.

of the Year in 1992. After two years, he became Second Lieutenant, and
was a line officer for a total of eight years, including Captain in
2005 and 2006. He has been very active on both the fundraising and
recruitment/retention committees for many years. Following another
family tradition of Frank and Norbert Adolf, He has been Treasurer of
the Protective Hose since 1998. He was the PHC Firefighter of the year
